Tan Residence explores how factory manufactured components and regionally appropriate materials can be brought together within a coordinated residential environment. The project draws upon manufacturers and suppliers in Malaysia and China to develop wall panels, window and door assemblies, millwork, modular ceiling components, furniture systems, and other built elements.
The material and spatial direction is informed by the layers of a tropical rainforest. The lower level uses deeper wood tones, tactile surfaces, and earthy materials to evoke the environment beneath the canopy. As the house rises, the palette becomes lighter and airier. Wainscoting establishes a visual horizon, while coordinated lighting strengthens the sense of moving upward through the tree line.
Custom cabinetry and carpentry incorporate branching forms that connect the manufactured elements to the broader concept. Components are developed with attention to fabrication, coordination, transportation, and installation, creating continuity across the different levels of the home.
